Snacks have a reputation almost as scandalous as dessert, but neither should be
feared when it comes to what’s on your plate. Maybe it seems unregimented or it’ll throw you off track, but whatever the case, it’s time to set the record straight. Snacks are a perfectly normal part of an average day. There are so many misconceptions around the
concept of eating between meals, but ignoring your body and its hunger cues isn’t a smart choice.
Of course, the majority of your snacks should fuel your body and mind, so I’m not telling you to hit up the Taco Bell drive-thru every day for nachos. Everybody has unique nutritional needs, which is why we recommend working with a coach who can help you identify them.
Still, as a general rule of thumb, healthy snacks can:
Help speed up muscle recovery.
Replenish energy stores.
Help control binge-style eating from being overly hungry.
Regulate blood sugar levels.
Having ready-made options, like greek yogurt, string cheese or an apple, make it easy to tame a growling stomach without the fuss. One of my personal favorites is a refreshing afternoon smoothie that can be blended up in minutes.
Whatever you decide to reach for, allow yourself to enjoy it. Take the time to
savor the flavors in your mouth and appreciate your body’s desire for nourishment.
When you eat too quickly, your body does not have time to recognize that it is full, which
can lead to discomfort and poor digestion. Snacking with intention creates
awareness around your senses. This allows you to delight in what you’re eating and
notice when your body’s satisfied.
Snacks are not the enemy; they are the friendly sidekick who makes sure you
stay alert and ready for action. So next time you find yourself hungry midday, don’t
panic. Listen to your body, grab something nutritious, and enjoy!
